About this work
Three children jump in mid-air off a stone curb, arms flung wide, splashing into a shallow channel of water that runs along a tall blue wall streaked with white spray. Below them stretches an open expanse of bare orange-brown ground, where a large dark shadow, cast from outside the frame, spreads across the lower right corner.
Flat, poster-like color blocks of ultramarine, white and burnt orange give the figures a graphic, stylized silhouette, with the children's clothing and hair reduced to simple shapes. The intruding dark shadow, painted almost solid black, breaks the sunny palette and adds an ominous undertone to the otherwise buoyant, energetic scene of play.
